The Viridian light switch is a simple light-green circle
on a wooden base. Touch the circle and the switch turns on or off.
A control in the back of the switchplate, set
during installation, makes the switch either just turn on and off
or act as a dimmer that lowers the lights for as long as a touch lasts,
then turns them on brightly again at the next touch.
Some advantages of the new Viridian switchplate:
- No moving parts. Any touch on the green central plate electrically activates the switch.
- No petrochemicals. The face of the switchplate is made out of second-growth wood, not plastic.
- No annoying "features". Who wants a light switch that is incessantly glowing,
or whose motion sensor turns it on and off whenever a pet walks by? The Viridian light switch
projects further from the wall than ordinary light switches, so
that your hand will run into it if you're groping in the dark.
- No remodeling. The light switch is the same shape as an ordinary one and uses standard screws.
No re-drilling, re-painting, or re-wiring necessary.
- Understated design and only one place to touch -- that looks like
a recessed button -- means that your friends won't be wondering
how to turn the lights on when you have them
over.

and keeps your fingers from inadvertantly hitting two switches at once:
