Ruthless Watchers
It wasn't as if I wanted her to notice me
I was just looking at people
With my notebook and pen and shifty eye
I'm just getting it down for my book.
Ruthless watchers, ruthless watchers
In Mid-Wilshire there's one in each restaurant
I didn't really mean to make a date
But I thought "Maybe this will be useful"
Character development, a common human situation...
So I went with just a piece of paper in my pocket.
Ruthless watchers, ruthless watchers
In Hollywood there's two or three in each coffee bar
I told her my favorite film was "Being There"
And looked at her closely after that
She wanted me to come home
I wondered if I could do it with only my non-writing hand
Ruthless watchers, ruthless watchers
I think everyone here has a pen and a pad
It was all right, I guess
And I wrote it all down afterwards
A sudden question "Why do you like me?" I asked
"Because you pay attention to me" she said
Her eyes looked sad. I don't know why.
